Tony Iommi, guitarist of Black Sabbath, lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers on his right hand in an accident at the sheet metal factory where he worked; and this was an important factor which shaped his playing and the simple but distorted power chords central to the music.
It is no accident that Heavy Metal was born in the 1970s, during a period of industrial decline in England as well as the USA, where steel and mining industries collapsed, leaving a large percentage of a generation of young men without work in dilapidated towns rampant with homelessness, crime, and addiction. It is also no accident that Heavy Metal became a world wide phenomenon in the 1980s, during the era of global neo-liberalism, of mom and pop shops snuffed out by corporate chains, of public services and spaces conquered by extreme privatisation, of fictitious capital overtaking the banking sector, what is otherwise known as the financialisation of Wall st.
The true essence of Metal, Punk, Hardcore, all Hard Rock (and indeed, all “counter-culture”) is expression of the trauma, misery, pain, and anger caused by the cascading social illnesses rooted in the extreme inequality of capitalism. Poverty, abuse, crime, alienation, etc. are the results of the logic of capital. Property-begets-property and wealth-generating-wealth has no possible outcome other than increasing concentration of property, wealth, and power, and increasing levels of dissonance, conflict, and violence.
This design, which reads "Eye Hate Capitalism", reconnects the confused and commodified rage of depoliticised angry music to its working class, revolutionary, radical roots (with a nod to the original sludge stoner doom band from the NOLA metal scene, Eye Hate God).
